Pokhara Sports: The registration process for the 19th edition of the Pokhara International Marathon has begun. The Nepal Ex-Sportsmen Forum, an umbrella organization for former Nepali athletes, has announced the opening of registrations.
The Pokhara International Marathon, which began in 2001 to put Pokhara on the world map through sports, is registered with AIMS, the international umbrella organization for marathons. It is also recognized as the second-oldest marathon in South Asia.
The marathon is a special event, with a route passing through Pokhara’s main market, the famous Phewa Lake, and various religious centers, establishing itself as a unique socio-cultural race. The event has consistently received support from key institutions, including the Gandaki Provincial Government, the Provincial Sports Council Gandaki, Pokhara Metropolitan City, and the Nepal Tourism Board. International partners such as Pokhareli Manch UK, Tamu Dhee UK, Sahara UK, Bagar Bhai Khalak UK, and supporters from Australia, the USA, and Japan also contribute to the event.
The marathon includes several categories: the full marathon (42.195 km), women’s half marathon, a 5 km race for schoolboys and schoolgirls, a 10 km race for men and women, and races for visually impaired and wheelchair athletes (men and women). The Pokhara International Marathon offers one of the largest prize purses in Nepal.
Last year, the 18th edition of the Pokhara International Marathon saw participation from over 15,000 people. To make the event environmentally friendly, all registration processes are being conducted online through www.pokharamarathon.org. The marathon is held annually on the first Saturday of the first week of the Nepali month of Falgun (February 15, 2025).
